The internet is used by billions of people, and the browser has always been the interface to it. Data sent from browser to server, server to browser. That's how it's always worked.
Originally published on X on 10 November 2025. Republished as written; what has changed since: the Chrome extension, the crowd-sourced contributor network, the extension's password manager and the promised contributor rewards are all retired. Unbrowse is now one hosted service (unbrowse.ai/mcp) that learns sites in its own cloud browser, keeps saved logins in a sealed server-side vault, and shares only verified, read-only routes in a public registry; it is free during the beta for 500 verified calls a month. The extension's closed beta described below has ended. We removed the extension install steps and the Chrome Web Store and Smithery links, replaced the unmeasured failure and success percentages with plain words, and dropped an embedded comparison video.
Now we're building AI agents, and we're making them use the same interface: browsers, GUIs, webpages. We assume agents have to do things the way humans always did.
But what if they didn't?
What if agents could skip the browser entirely and talk directly to website servers? No loading webpages. No parsing images. No clicking buttons. Just pure execution.
Built for agents, not humans.
Why Current AI Agents Are Broken
AI agents are stuck doing things the human way.
You know how ChatGPT (with Atlas) and Perplexity (with Comet) can try to do things for you, like fill out forms or pull financial information?
Here's the dirty secret: they're watching your screen like a robot squinting at a map. They're slow, they break constantly, and they fail a lot of the time.
The GUI Problem
What happens now with Atlas/Comet:
- AI takes a screenshot of the website
- AI tries to figure out where buttons are
- AI simulates clicking around like a robot
- Website changes layout → everything breaks
- Takes 30-45 seconds for simple tasks
- Fails often
Real example:
You: "Book me a flight to Tokyo"
AI: Takes screenshot... identifies search box... types slowly... clicks... waits for page load... takes another screenshot... gets confused by popup...
45 seconds later: "Sorry, I encountered an error"
Agents are slow, resource-intensive, and compete for space on your computer. They can't run in parallel. They break when websites change.
This is the bottleneck preventing AI agents from becoming true virtual employees.
The Unbrowse Difference
We don't watch screens. We talk directly to websites.
Instead of vision-based automation, we intercept network traffic to website servers at the packet level: the actual HTTP requests your browser sends. We're speaking the website's native language, not trying to read its visual interface.
Same task with Unbrowse:
Direct network request to flight API.
1 second. Done.
Why Speed Actually Matters
It's not just about being faster. It's about what becomes possible.
Current agents:
- "Let me find that flight" → 40 seconds
- Chain 5 tasks together → 3+ minutes
- Real-world reliability → poor (one failure kills the chain)
Unbrowse vision:
- "Book flight, update calendar, notify team, order car service, send itinerary"
- Total time: 2 seconds
- Reliable enough to chain
Speed unlocks complexity. When actions are instant, you can chain dozens of them together reliably.
How does this work?
Unbrowse relies on crowd-sourced interactions to the internet to build a network of abilities.
Think of the network this way. You have the internet, where websites and their servers live, ready to be accessed by browsers. As people browse using the Unbrowse extension, they build a layer on top of it for every website endpoint there is, translating the website to be compatible with AI agents.
The collective network of all these AI-native endpoints is what we have coined the "Unbrowse Agentic Web".
Once you have indexed a site by browsing it, if it is compatible, it will be added to the network of learnt abilities that Unbrowse can perform.
If you're technical and understand MCPs (Model Context Protocol), think of this as the holy grail of Universal MCPs that everyone has been waiting for. It routes your request through the index to get the job done for you.
How do I participate?
In the original, this section asked readers to install our open-source browser extension and browse normally with their accounts, contributing patterns to the network, and described the extension as a password manager for signing in to sites with your own accounts. That extension and its contribution model are retired, so the install instructions are not reproduced here.
The more people contribute, the smarter the network becomes.
The Vision
Spin up virtual employees that work 24/7 using your credentials:
- Research agents pull competitor traffic, employee reviews, pricing data, and market trends across multiple sources. Compile investment reports using your subscriptions.
- Marketing agents post content across LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok simultaneously. Respond to comments and schedule follow-ups using your accounts.
- Sales agents monitor leads on LinkedIn, pull contact data, send personalized outreach from your email, book meetings on your calendar, and update your CRM.
- Support agents monitor tickets across Zendesk, Intercom, and email. Respond instantly as you, escalate complex issues, and update documentation.
- Analyst agents track competitor hiring, monitor product reviews, pull traffic data, and alert you to market shifts in real time.
Each agent executes tasks in parallel with others. Each works with your credentials. Each uses the patterns the network learned from real browsing.
Developers that want to build on top of Unbrowse can use our MCP within any agent they build, free during the beta. (The MCP now lives at unbrowse.ai/mcp; the docs show how to connect it.)
Why contribute to the network?
- Teach agents how to use the internet so your favorite sites are supported, while benefiting the entire community
- Once the flywheel tap is turned on, reap your rewards for your contributions. (This never shipped: Unbrowse pays no contributor rewards.)
Join the Closed Beta
We're launching a closed beta to test Unbrowse with early contributors.
What to expect:
- Free access to the extension and platform
- Clear risk disclosure and privacy controls
- Ability to contribute patterns and see your impact
- Help shape the future of agent-powered internet access
This is a beta product. You're entering at your own risk. We're transparent about limitations and actively working to improve.
For now, we have disabled performing actions on the internet until we can get full reliability for it, which means for now you can only pull information from the agentic web.
First use case: Web3, Finance & Investment Research
Our initial focus is helping investors and analysts research Web3 and traditional finance faster: pull earnings data, analyze competitor traffic, research investment opportunities, and access financial data from your existing subscriptions instantly.
